Meaning of Shri Shiv Chalisa

Shiv Chalisa Lyrics
शिव चालीसा (Shiv Chalisa)

Doha

Victory to Shri Ganesh, son of Goddess Girija, The auspicious root and the well-learned one. Ayodhyadas proclaims, “Grant me the gift of fearlessness.”

Chaupai

Victory to the husband of Girija, the compassionate Lord. He always protects and nurtures his devotees and children. With a crescent moon adorning his forehead, And earrings made of snakes’ hoods. His body covered in holy ash (bhasma), With the sacred river Ganga flowing from his matted locks. He wears tiger skin as clothing, His divine form captivates the minds of snakes.

The mother bird Maina desires his affection, His left side adorns an enchanting form. He holds a trident in his hand, a symbol of power, Always destroying the enemies. Nandi and Ganesh are seated beside him, Just as a lotus resides in the middle of the ocean. Kartik, Shyam, and Ganarau, No one can accurately describe this divine form.

Whenever the gods call out to him in distress, Lord Shiva immediately removes their sorrows. During the great turmoil caused by Tarakasura, All the gods turned to you for help. Immediately, you sent the six-faced Kartikeya into battle, And in a fraction of a second, you destroyed the enemy. You defeated the demon Jaladhar, Your fame is known throughout the world.

You engaged in battle with the demon Tripurasura, And showered your grace upon all, saving them. You performed rigorous penance, O Bhagiratha, And fulfilled your promise by bringing the sacred river Ganga to Earth. There is no one as generous as you, Your devotees always praise and serve you. The Vedas sing your divine glory, The unfathomable and timeless secrets are beyond comprehension.

During the churning of the ocean, A blazing fire emerged, causing chaos among the gods and demons. You showed mercy and came to their aid, And henceforth, you were known as Neelkanth (the one with a blue throat). When Lord Rama worshiped you, You blessed Vibhishan and aided in the victory over Lanka. You held the entire universe within a lotus-shaped vessel, And thus, you were tested and emerged victorious.

Lord, please protect me like a single lotus petal, I worship your lotus eyes with devotion. Observing my ardent devotion, Lord Shankar, You became pleased and granted my desired blessings. Victory, victory, victory to the infinite and imperishable Lord, Who bestows his grace upon all beings. All wickedness constantly troubles me, I wander aimlessly without finding solace.

Save me, O Lord, save me, Now is the time to uplift and rescue me. Take your trident and strike down the enemies, Free me from this distress. Mother, father, and brother may be there, But no one inquires about my troubles. You are my only hope, O Lord, Come quickly and alleviate my burdensome sorrows.

You always grant wealth to the impoverished, Whoever seeks you receives abundant rewards. In what way can I offer praise to you? Forgive our mistakes, O Lord. O Shankar, you are the destroyer of troubles, The cause of auspiciousness and the remover of obstacles. Yogis, ascetics, and sages meditate upon you, Sharada, Narada, and the heads of nine sages bow to you.

I bow to you repeatedly, victory to you, O Lord Shiva, Even the gods and Brahma cannot comprehend your true essence. Whoever recites this with a focused mind, Attains the support and assistance of Lord Shiva. Regardless of one’s social status or authority, By reciting this, they attain purity and victory. Even those who are childless and yearning for desires, Will surely receive blessings through the grace of Lord Shiva.

The learned ones observe the Trayodashi (thirteenth lunar day) fast, They meditate and perform the sacred fire ceremony. They observe the Trayodashi fast regularly, So that their bodies remain free from afflictions. They offer incense, lamps, and food offerings, And recite the Chalisa in front of Lord Shiva. The sins of many lifetimes are washed away, And they attain the ultimate abode of Lord Shiva. Ayodhyadas proclaims, “I seek refuge in you, O Lord, Knowing that you can eradicate all my sorrows.”

Doha

Every morning, I devoutly perform worship, Reciting the Chalisa. O Lord, fulfill my desires, And bring completeness to the world, O Jagadish (Master of the Universe).
